Having completed the president Barack Obama flagship Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders (YALI), both Andrew Salema Ludigo and Rashida Nakabuga used this platform by creating a partnership which led to the coffee trail concept. It is through their experience mainly in mentor-ship of young people, that they both identified a need that required urgent response. The coffee industry in Uganda is in need of youthful energy. Leadership is crucial in ensuring that every opportunity available in improving the value of coffee in Uganda is well utilized. With their exposure in business and civic engagement, they realized that being exemplary in collaborating despite different backgrounds, it can ignite a movement of innovative minds that are practical in promoting Ugandan coffee while earning from it.
Rejuvenating cultures need to start with the youth and this will inculcate leadership in them. The coffee trail is intended to create awareness among the youth on how important coffee is and how many other fellow youth have managed to earn a living through this venture. the idea is for them to take a lead role and not the back seat. Also exposing the youth to opportunities within the industry and different key players. Currently the industry vision is to produce 4 million bags by 2020 from about 2 million bags produced. How can this be achieved without the resourcefulness of those that make up the biggest percentage of the country's population?
VISION: To boost the coffee drinking culture by tapping into the innovativeness of young people through allowing them to utilize their stories to network with an aim of creating jobs that will maximize every opportunity along the coffee value chain.
MISSION: To leave a trail of opportunity for every Ugandan to utilize for economic development
